Roof Rats are great pets for the right owner
When we first started out breeding Roof Rats, there were very few sources of information about them. Most of what we know about their care and behaviour, we had to learn first hand. It hasn’t always been easy, and we made many mistakes along the way. But we stuck with it because we honestly felt it was worth it.
Our Roof Rats were nutty, hyperactive, noisy, destructive and exasperating at times, but they were also always our dear little friends and companions. We cannot imagine our lives without them. There was a time when most of our Roof Rats were so uncooperative that we used to handle them in a tent. Now, I let my favorites free range in my home office while I’m working. It’s been quite a journey, and many doubted we’d ever get to this point (you know who you are), but I never stopped believing. Roofy made me a believer: I never doubted that Roof Rats descendant from her could be great pets. She’s gone now, but her memory, and her essence, lives on in all of them.
My goal in these lessons was to give the reader an honest impression what it would be like to have a pet Roof Rat, for better or worse. Nobody should have a pet that they don’t like or want, but everyone has the right to make that personal choice for themselves. You will now have to decide if having a pet Roof Rat is the right choice for you. If it is, then we hope that one of Roofy’s progeny can someday make your life happier, too. Please let us know when you are ready to take the next step.
